The eleven fountains in the eleven Frisian cities, designed by eleven artists from eleven different countries, are part of the 11fountains project. This international art initiative was created for Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018, the European Capital of Culture, and was conceived and curated by Anna Tilroe.
Leeuwarden
‘Love’ consists of two 7-meter-tall white sculptures of a boy and a girl. They appear to be looking at each other, but their eyes are closed. The children’s expressions are serene. Around them hangs a 2-meter-high mist cloud, which visitors can wander through. "They are dreaming," says Plensa; "for children, the future is a dream full of promises." The Spanish artist drew inspiration for the mist fountain when he saw the fog over the Frisian fields early in the morning. "In Friesland," he said, "the water comes up from the ground."
