    "Grote" or "Jacobijner" church Leeuwarden

    One of the main attractions in Leeuwarden is the Grote or Jacobijnerkerk, located at Jacobijnerkerkhof. Construction of the church began before 1300 and continued until after 1500, making it the oldest monument in the city.
    Notable is the Oranjepoortje on the eastern side, a portal featuring a small tree with orange apples and the coat of arms of Leeuwarden. This is the old entrance for the stadtholders of Friesland. For centuries, members of the stadtholder family were buried in the Grote Kerk. The Frisian stadtholders are direct ancestors of the Dutch royal family. Leeuwarden, along with Delft and Breda, is one of the three cities with a royal crypt.
